Murder, scandal, political espionage and an extremely dangerous woman. Lucas Davenport's going to be lucky to get out of this one alive.

A Minnesota political fixer has hit the jackpot - or so he thinks. Hired to take down the incumbent U.S. senator with a vicious smear, to open the way for an ambitious, take-no-prisoners heiress who sees the Senate as merely a stepping-stone, he decides his payoff should be larger. The blackmail demand should yield some pretty large numbers, he thinks.

Instead, he gets only a small one - 9 millimeters, to be exact. In the heart.

Davenport is investigating the smear when the trail leads to the man's disappearance, then - very troublingly - to the Minneapolis police department, then - most troublingly of all - to a woman who could give Machiavelli lessons. She has very definite ideas about the way the world should work, and the money, ruthlessness and sheer will to make it happen.

No matter who gets in the way.

Silken Prey edition by John Sandford Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Based on the last three books I've read, it seems like everyone is jumping on the topics of political corruption and government abuse of power. John Grisham's THE RACKETEER and C.J. Box's BREAKING POINT both join John Sandford in throwing more wood on the fire that seems to be our evolving distrust of the federal government. However SILKEN PREY takes it down to the state level where dirty politics come into play. What's next, a book about corruption at the city and county level? Everyone who is knowledgeable of politics knows that manipulations at all levels of government probably began before Roman times. Authors just seem to be getting more aggressive about putting it in front of us.

I've always loved the characters in John Sandford's novels and appreciate it when he introduces and develops new players to his stories. All of them--except for the really bad actors--have this self-deprecating sense of humor that often makes me chuckle. One might say that drawing together such a like-minded cast is improbable, but I realize that my best friends share the same warped sense of humor that I have. What better way to spend a day than laughing with your friends?

So I continue to pick up some of John Sandford's books for light and entertaining reading, sort of like a palette cleansing before moving on to a more difficult author. I'm pretty sure that he'll continue to spin off some of his main characters into series' of their own. That's just fine with me. Just keep bringing on the laughs.

Silken Prey edition by John Sandford Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

John Sandford is at the top of his game in Silken Prey! A very quick paced novel that grabs you on the first page and doesn't let go till the last word is read. Very strong characters and a well written story line will keep you reading well into the night. Mr. Sandford's skill at weaving a great story is not lost in Silken Prey but just adds to how great a writer he is.

I really like the way Mr. Sandford keeps bringing back characters from past novels and they fit like a glove in the story line. Not to many authors can do this and Mr. Sandford does is ohhhh so well!!

If you are not a reader of Mr. Sandford's novels, I highly suggest you start reading them now as there is not a weak book among them. His Kidd novels, the Prey(Lucas Davenport) novels and the Virgil Flowers novels are a must read for readers that like their stories with thrill, chills, suspense, mystery, action and great writing! I have suggested Mr. Sandford's novels to many others and they have not been disappointed and are avid readers of his novels as I am. You just can't go wrong with a John Sandford novel!

One last thing about Silken Prey, is there going to be another book about the lovely and talented Ms. Grant? Can't wait for Lucas and her to go head to head!!
At the beginning of SILKEN PREY, John Sandford seems to be mining his experience as a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter as he explores the skullduggery involved in a Minnesota senate race. The Republican incumbent is caught with child porn on his computer.

The problem for the democratic governor is that the computer is smack dab in the middle of the Republican candidate's campaign quarters; he'd have to be an idiot to be put this sort of stuff on such an accessible machine. The governor suspects dirty tricks, and he knows the democrats could just as easily lose the election and the legislature if it is discovered that they put the smut there to frame the senator. He asks Lucas Davenport to look into it and Lucas accepts.

The democratic candidate is a woman with more money than God and no conscience to go with the big bucks. We know she was behind it from the beginning and we follow her machinations. She also has hired two security staff members with special forces experience in Afghanistan and Iraq. Lucas refers to them as trained killers. The man who put the porn on the senator's computer (actually he got somebody else to do it) decides to blackmail the democratic candidate, and he pays the price with his life. These aren't spoilers. We know this stuff early on in the book.

I know a lot of readers are going to react the same way I did this is so over the top! But would you believe that St. Paul was once a safe haven for John Dillinger and the Barker gang? Or that Al Capone basically owned the mayor of Chicago? So it's possible that some mafia don or Capone type had a political hack killed at some time or another. But would a billionaire woman who looked like Angelina Jolie be so power crazed that she'd resort to murder to get elected?

There's also a secondary plot where two of Lucas's computer hacker friends check out the incumbent senator's computer and search the Minneapolis Police Department system for the porn file. It had to come from someplace, right? And the vice cops were likely suspects. Oh, yeah, the wife, Lauren, just happens to be a safe cracker, and she decides to steal Taryn Grant's jewels at the same time the election returns are coming in and Lucas is trying to nail the special ops people along with Grant for murder.

Don't get me wrong; this is a real page turner and if you accept what passes for mysteries and suspense these days (Agatha Christie must be spinning in her grave), you're probably buy this plot line, too. Oh, yeah, the ending is absolutely terrible. It was like Sandford had a deadline and he didn't know how to end the book. It's also just a bit cynical; I hope Sandford doesn't really feel this way about government in general.
